The Difference Between Quiet and Silence

Listen.

What do you hear?  You will most likely hear some sort of activity of other people.  Listen some more.

Now imagine, one by one, removing those noises from your environment.  Can you?  Have you ever experienced an absence of human sound?

No music, no talking, no traffic noise, no computer sounds, no hum of air conditioning or heating, not even the sound of someone else breathing….

from noises…………

…….to quiet

to silence …………………

to stillness ………………….

  1. At my cabin in the Black Hills, SD, it is sometimes so still not even animal or insect sounds are heard, or the wind in the pines. It is very special.

  2. I know the feeling – I had a cabin in the middle of the Rockies. One winter day, the air was absolutely still, and it was so cold, you’d think the air would break. The lake was about 2 miles north of the cabin, but it was actually so quiet I could hear two guys that were ice fishing laughing out on the ice.

It was rather eerie, but I loved it.
